Philadelphia [excerpt]
Things are brightening up a bit and but for the gloom occasioned by the terrible calamity that has befallen the country in the tragic death of President McKinley we should say that business was good for the time of year. The display of mourning as seen on all prominent buildings and stores along the principal streets of the city is remarkable in its [260][261] extent. It is a wonder where it all came from and only shows what facilities there are in these times when such an unexpected demand can be supplied. There were some flowers sent to Washington for the obsequies, one of the largest pieces being a six-foot column from the Chinese settlement. All the stores were closed on Thursday, only being open for orders that had been taken for that day.
