tragic death of the President of the United States must have caused every intelligent person, whether belonging to the English-speaking races or not, to experience a feeling of the most profound regret. Struck down in the midst of his remarkable career, and under circumstance so painful, his loss is the more keenly felt by the great nation whose chief citizen he was, as well as by all those who had learnt to admire his noble personal qualities and to appreciate how well he had wielded his great power for good. In their own heavy loss the British nation received the deepest sympathy of their American kindred, and it is our sad duty to offer them our own to-day in a spirit no less earnest and sincere.
