The country has learned with the profoundest sorrow of the attempted assassination of President McKinley in the exposition grounds at Buffalo. No ruler of any age has borne a leader’s share in larger or more successful policies, and never did any enjoy in paramount degree the confidence and esteem of his fellow countrymen, or of the peoples of the nations. All loyal hearts join in the universal prayer, that he may be spared to this nation and to the world. May his distinguished career end with full service performed, rather than in untimely sacrifice to the bullet of a demented assassin, is the single hope of the people.
