A Suggestion

In discussing the case of President McKinley a great many theories have been advanced and suggestions made as to the cause of the necrosis along the track of the bullet. It would seem, however, that the most reasonable explanation may be found in the well-known destructive action of the low velocity of the bullet; the destruction in an inverse ratio to the velocity of the projectile. In the case of the President the velocity of the ball may be judged by the fact that the first ball did not even penetrate the skin. This, when considered in connection with the low vitality of the tissues should be sufficient to explain the gangrenous condition found at the autopsy.
