Department of Army Nursing [excerpt]

     We are overjoyed to report the Surgeon-General back at his desk, apparently much improved, having gained in weight, and his features wearing a becoming coat of ruddy tan. He seems glad to be again at work, though he speaks of an enjoyable trip. The death of the President came as a severe blow to him, as they were warm personal friends. He had heard of the shooting at Nagasaki, but the cablegrams were of such an encouraging nature that he was wholly unprepared for the dreadful ending of the tragedy, the news of which did not reach him until his arrival in San Francisco.
