Heavy Traffic on Chicago Street Railways
Heavy traffic was handled by the elevated roads of Chicago on September 19th, the day of President McKinley’s funeral. The Metropolitan heads the list with 121,335 passengers, 90 per cent. of whom were carried between 12:30 and 6:30 p. m. It was found necessary to use every car of the company, 290 in number, to accommodate the people. The South Side elevated carried 106,000 passengers during the day, the Northwestern carried over 75,000 and the Lake street [sic] over 50,000. No accident of any kind occurred on any one of the lines. On the surface lines the traffic is reported to have been, if anything, lighter than usual. This can be accounted for by the long interruption in the downtown service, which was occasioned by the passing of the parade. The usual heavy morning and evening traffic was also lost on account of the offices, stores and factories being closed.
