     HOW near are the hearts and how strong the ties which bind together the homes of the people of America has found proof in the universal expressions of sorrow and condolence for Mrs. McKinley in her bereavement. To her the loss was personal, a husband true and tried, and it was to the wife, the woman, the modest, loving consort of the man, rather than to the wife of an official, that the sympathy of the nation poured out so spontaneously. It was a recognition of the wife, the head of the home, more touching and more significant than the grief of the nation over the loss of its President. I view this as one of the most promising signs of the times, a sure indication of the human sympathy and domestic loyalty to be found in the home of every true American.
