Grandest of men! we mourn for thee,
And look to God on bended knee;
A prince has fallen and gone to rest,
A martyr honored by nations blest.

O, loved of millions! sleep in peace,
Our love for thee shall never cease.
Friend of the poor, the truth and right,
Thy radiant smile dispelled the night.

The blessed memory of thy worth
Will last as long as sky and earth.
Oh! happy death the righteous die,
Without a moan, without a sigh!

When mighty thrones shall tumble down
And human pride of long renown
Shall fall, thy lustrous name will be
Adored in this land of the free.
