The Murder of President McKinley
A correspondent writes: Everyone is horrified at the Buffalo outrage. But the talk about international measures of repression is quite wild. It would be much more to the purpose to seek for the cause and source of anarchism. Is it not in the ceaseless extension of the powers of the State, in new forms or taxation, in militarism (of which the most brutal examples are reported from Germany and Austria daily), in the extension of military empires and the crushing out of nationality everywhere; in the partial adoption, even by countries hitherto considered free, of the German State-idea? Other causes are to be found, no doubt; but these, which may be summed up by saying that they have at last produced a reaction in the form of anarchism, deserve to be considered.
