Nearly a year after this document was posted it was discovered that the cartoon originally appeared in St. Paul’s Pioneer Press on an undetermined date prior to the McKinley assassination. (A reprint appears in the 6 September 1901 issue of the Marshalltown, Iowa, Evening Times-Republican. MAI’s editor does not have access to Pioneer Press back issues.) Likely the cartoon was prompted by Roosevelt’s 2 September 1901 speech at the Minnesota State Fair. In The Appeal the cartoon is accompanied on the same page with a 92-line untitled poem about Roosevelt by C. R. Barns (which alludes to Roosevelt’s accession to the presidency with the lines “He’s the leader for us now!” [84] and “All are safe when Roosevelt leads!” [92]).
