“Yellow Journalism” so called is coming for more or less abuse since the attempted assassination of President McKinley and while some of the charges are unjust and overdrawn there is reason for the managers of these sheets to pause and hang their heads in shame. Presumably the men who manage these papers are loyal citizens in the main, but in their anxiety to increase the sales of their papers they cater to the prejudice of the people in a manner which creates discord and discontent. With the “yellows” any government is rotten, the poor are oppressed and its [sic] a rare day when they do not strive in some way to set the masses up against classes. Now the people themselves are not anarchists and but few of them are even socialists, but strange to say they take to the newspapers which cry that the wealthy get it all and the poor get nothing. The trend of utterances of these newspapers is not to teach the people patriotism and Christianity, but to cultivate a spirit of vindictiveness. That these newspapers realize that they are more or less guilty is shown by the fact that since the attempted assassination of the president there has been an entire absence of the old hypocritical cries in their columns. And still these newspapers are doing as they do simply to build up big circulations and make fortunes.
