God Save the President!
McKinley suffers, and the people weep,
All party lines forgotten in our grief.
Our hearts unite in prayer that God may keep
Him with us still, our President—our chief. The blow was aimed at one. It fell on all.
Would love and faith could draw him back to life!
The nation dreads to hear the final call,
Remembering his virtues—and his wife.He gave to us the best he had to give.
Surely, this stroke shall not record the end.
The flag shall wave to show us he will live—
Our soldier-President—our chief, our friend!
