Sincere Feeling on the Isthmus
Flags Were Half-Masted and Genuine Sorrow Prevailed.
Panama, Colombia, Sept. 15.—The death of President
McKinley produced a feeling of profound regret among all classes throughout
the Isthmus.
Flags were half-masted upon all of the consulates,
public buildings and large business houses. Saturday afternoon salutes were
fired from the shore batteries and from the battleship Iowa. On all the shipping
in the bay the flags are at half-mast.
A public reception, which had been planned in
honor of the officers of the Iowa and the Icarus at the Commercial Club on Saturday
evening, was postponed.
