full text
James B. Parker (poetry).
Named persons
Arthur; James B. Parker.
The poem below is prefaced by the following statement by Lovejoy: “Not a ‘legend.’ Give Jim Parker, in his deed, full credit and honor.”

Jim Parker

Say not that his skin was as hue of the night,
Speak not of his color, but measure him right
In the scale of humanity, for, lot he was
A Man, every inch of him, truly, because
He answered to Duty, and quickly and well,
When he smote to the dust the sly demon of hell.

No knight, like Sir Arthur’s, of ancient days,
Was he, but his deed it has won the world’s praise,
So lift, lift your hats as this fellow goes by,
While a smile lights your face and a tear fills each eye—
As you think of it all—while your proud lips proclaim:
“Jim Parker! Ah, you are a true knight of fame!”
