McKinley

[From Barrice (Ont.) Advocate.]

Imperial President! Majestic Star!
Who spake like Christ, when summoned to the bar!
By right divine of mind and moral worth,
A King among the rulers of the earth!

While envious Death a Judas greeting gave
And smote with fatal aim ere friend could save,
No thought of self thy visage writ with care,
Thy loved wife and thy slayer wouldst thou spare.

A Prince of God, another Israel thou,
With noblest diadem upon thy brow,
Who wrestled not in vain the crown to win,—
Enduring victory o’er self and sin.

Thy great, strong, tender soul has passed beyond,
To bind the nations’ hearts in firmer bond;
Humanity is weeping by thy bier
And feels no shame at touch of falling tear.

Immortal Dead! Illustrious deed was thine;
Thy large heart beat with sympathy divine;
Thy words and wisdom e’er shall fitly grace,
In brain and page, the brotherhood of race.

     Peterborough, Ont., Sept. 16, 1901.
