God Save the President

O Thou, supreme o’er every land,
A stricken people ’neath Thee stand
     And lift our prayers on high.
His suffering, hearts have shocked and rent.
O save and spare our President,
     Granting he may not die!

A godly man, Thy servant plain,
Just ruler, without spot or stain,
     Holding all worthy praise.
Let not the wicked now prevail;
Confound them whom his life assail
     And grant him length of days.

Our countrymen of every name
Now is our sorrow all the same,
     Beneath this horror bent:
Come, let us pray before the throne—
He can restore and He alone,—
     God save our President!

     Geneva, Sept. 7th.
