Catafalque Is Again in the Crypt

     Washington, Sept. 18.—A coverless catafalque was removed from the floor of the rotunda to the crypt of the Capitol today, where it had been kept, prior to its sad use yesterday, since the days it bore the remains of Lincoln and Garfield. It is one of many old relics which are hidden from the light of day in the crypt and other dark nooks of the building.
     When brought out to uphold President McKinley’s body it had to be covered with dark broadcloth and draped with tassels and fringe, arranged in graceful festoons. The fringe could not be obtained in the city and was specially manufactured for the occasion within four hours after the looms were started for the purpose Monday night. This fringe will not be used again, neither will be the black catafalque covering.
     According to custom the covering will be cut into small bits, as souvenirs of a nation’s sorrow, for senators, representatives and other officials.
