National and International Notes
[excerpt]

President ROOSEVELT will not hold any official function at the White House until after the public reception on New Year’s Day; after that they will take place as formerly. Neither can formal calls of organizations and officials in a body be received until after thirty days from the date of President MCKINLEY’S death. The flag on the White House will fly at half-mast, and mourning paper be used by the heads of the departments for thirty days.

——————————

We take it for granted that memorial services for President MCKINLEY were held in every Methodist Episcopal church of any considerable size in the United States, and doubtless in many that would not come under this description. Reports of them are coming to the office from all quarters, as also are resolutions passed by different bodies, some within our own Church, and others, such as Union League Clubs, from without. Foreseeing that this would be the case, we concluded to publish no resolutions except those passed by the Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the Metropolitan Church of Washington, which the President attended. These appeared last week. Nor can we publish any poems or sermons, in full or in part, that the occasion has called forth.
