Notes |
Descriptive text accompanying the illustration reads as follows: “The
casket containing McKinley’s remains as it stood in the Capitol rotunda
during the services yesterday was completely draped in an American flag
and was covered with flowers, the notable feature being a great sheaf
from President Roosevelt, which was at the foot of the casket on top.
The casket rested on a plain black pedestal, about the shape of the old
confederate ram Merrimac, sloping from the floor up to the casket. Resting
against the pedestal, so as to reach up to and overlap the casket, were
half a dozen floral pieces on either side, chiefly wreaths, sheaves of
roses, and crosses. At the head of the casket was a separate floral cross
of large proportions. Other sets of flowers were arranged around the wall
of the rotunda. There was no canopy over the casket, that plan having
been abandoned at the last moment.”
