Editorial Notes [excerpt]

On Friday last, at a public reception at the Exposition at Buffalo, N. Y., President McKinley was shot by an anarchist. The man approached in the line of those who desired to shake hands with the President, with one arm in a sling and with the hand bandaged. Inside of the bandage he had a revolver with which he shot the President twice. One bullet struck the breast bone, the other penetrated the stomach. He was immediately arrested.

——————————

The President received the best medical attention, very speedily, in an emergency hospital within the Exposition grounds. After the necessary surgical operation, he was removed to the residence of Mr. Milburn, President of the Exposition. On Saturday, he had a rising pulse, though not a rising temperature, but on Sunday he had four hours of good natural sleep, and from that time both the pulse and temperature have been reduced in a favorable way. Of course the danger to his life is not yet past, but there is ground for hope.

——————————

The event has produced an awful shock in all the country. His Christian character, his noble, prudent bearing, and his constant courtesy have made him beloved. And the dastardly assault has aroused intense indignation. With great unanimity the Christian people of this land lifted their prayers to God on Sunday last that if, in God’s wisdom, it be best for this nation, the life of the President may be spared, and his health and efficiency be restored. The event has demonstrated the heartiness with which the good people of this country sustain their government. There were but a few meetings of semi-anarchist tendency in which the assault on the President was regarded with indifference.

——————————

The attempted assassination of the President has aroused a deep conviction in the minds of our people that men of anarchistic designs must not be allowed to enter this country, and that anarchistic propaganda within the country cannot be tolerated. The law of God requires the maintenance of civil order and the repression of anarchism. And this recent event will almost certainly evoke legislation that will break up the organizations whose object is to destroy all law.
