The Pity of It

The Nation’s heart reeled ’neath the blow
That laid the gentle Chieftain low.

From clearest skies disaster fell
On him whom all men loved so well.

No hate for tyrants nerved the deed;
No thought that thus a land is freed.

Up rose in rage the dastard hand—
And grief sits heavy on the land.
