The Drooping Flag
Gaunt stand the poles against the sky
About the stricken town;
The flag that always charms the eye
Now droopeth sadly down.It idly swingeth to and fro,
By gentle breezes fanned,
And seems to feel the weight of woe
That fills the mourning land.But yesterday it floated free
By cheering thousands borne;
Today with misty eyes we see
The folds that mutely mourn.
