Descriptive text accompanying the photograph reads as follows: “President
McKinley making his speech at the Pan-American Exposition at Buffalo,
on Thursday, September 5th, the day before he was shot. Sitting around
him on the stand are Foreign Ministers, Cabinet officers, and other distinguished
men. At his left is the United States Marine Band. Mrs. McKinley is behind
the President and cannot be seen. This photograph was taken by G. Edward
Elwell, Jr., who was about twenty-five feet from the President and could
hear his speech distinctly.”
