An Official Salute Today
Today, Skagway, from a military standpoint, will
be officially notified of the death of President McKinley. On the Dolphin, Capt.
Jenks, of the command stationed here, received from the War Department at Washington,
the notification of the death of the executive head of the Nation.
This morning the cannon at the barracks will boom
forth a salute of thirteen guns.
At each half hour during the day one salute will
be fired, and this evening, at 5:30, sunset, forty-five salutes will be heard
re-echoing between the hills.
From now on for thirty days, the barracks will
be in mourning. The swords of the officers will be decorated in black.
