“Timekeepers of progress” is President McKinley’s characterization of the great modern expositions. This generous statement was among his last utterances, and it is painful to think that, with it almost upon his lips, he was shot down by an enemy of all progress who found in the crowded exposition the opportunity to commit a deed that would have disgraced the Middle Ages.
