Conditions, Not Anarchy, Responsible for Czolgosz’s Deed

THE true object of anarchy is to bring people to thinking that there are inequalities in the world which have been brought about by ignorance and by the force and power of government. We aim to educate the people to the [uselessness?] of government and the use of self dependence. I am a communist-anarchist. I believe in the common production of things. I believe that not only among men, but in the animal kingdom, there are two important characteristics which have enabled us, as well as the stronger animals, to survive, and those are mutual aid and mutual assistance. I am opposed positively to all forms of government by man over men.
     WHEN PEOPLE ARE HUNGRY AND DESOLATE, THEY ARE IN FIT CONDITION TO DO MOST ANY ACT, AND IF THEY COMMIT AN ACT THEY MUST NOT HOLD A CERTAIN PHILOSOPHICAL SCHOOL RESPONSIBLE FOR IT. IT IS NOT THE SCHOOL, BUT THE CONDITIONS, WHICH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR IT.
