Newport Society Startled by News of the Tragedy
.
Newport, Sept. 7.—When the news
of the terrible tragedy befalling President McKinley, became known yesterday
afternoon there was a general movement towards the newspaper offices to learn
if the report was true, and truth of the terrible affair soon spread to all
parts of the city and to all the military stations as well.
Cottagers as well as others drove down Thames
street [sic] to hear of the news and the telephone office was taxed to its utmost
in keeping subscribers in contact with the newspaper offices.
A report came along during the afternoon to the
effect the president was dead, but this was soon corrected by an Associated
Press dispatch denying such was the result at that time.
Nothing awoke the people in all walks of life
in Newport before as did this terrible affair.
The women were as much interested in the news
as the men, they not only telephoning to for the latest information, but some
of the gender [sic] sex hoped the man who had shot the president had been lynched.
