That Canton Assault
MAY HAVE BEEN MADE BY ESCAPED JAIL BIRDS.
Object May Have Been Merely to Obtain Possession of Guard’s Weapons
for Their Own Protection.
Canton, O., Sept. 30.—The city is deeply stirred over the attempt of unknown persons assaulted [sic] the guard at McKinley’s tomb. It is the general belief that there was an attempt to blow up the tomb though some hold that the assault was the work of “jail birds” who escaped from the city prison last night and were bent on getting the weapons from the guards to protect themsedves [sic] from pursuit. The soldiers are prohibited from talking of the matter. Additional guards will be stationed about the cemetery.
