President McKinley Assassinated at Buffalo Today

     Buffalo, Sept. 6—President McKinley was shot twice at the Pan-American exposition grounds this afternoon.
     The shooting was done by an insane man, who is now under arrest.
     One bullet struck the president in the chest. The second lodged in the groin.
     It is said at this hour that both wounds are serious.
     The shooting occurred shortly after 4 o’clock[,] while the president was on the Pan-American exposition grounds.
     The crank ran to a spot near the president, shouted something in an unintelligible tone, raised the pistol and discharged two shots in quick succession.
     Both shots took effect and the president sank back with a groan. He was removed to a building on the grounds where physicians were in attendance at once.
     The greatest excitement prevailed on the grounds. People ran hither and thither, and it was only with difficulty that the police were able to prevent the president’s assailant from being lynched. He disappeared in the crowd but was quickly caught and held. At the present writing the man’s name cannot be lear[n]ed.
     As this dispatch is sent the greatest excitement prevails throughout Buffalo, and it is almost impossible to get definite statements as to the president’s condition.
     It was announecd [sic] that the president’s physicians consider his wounds serious in the extreme, and that his recovery is a matter of doubt.
