Our Honored Guest
But yesterday he came, our honored guest,
The most distinguished man in all the earth;
No heritage was his but humble birth,
While love of home and country filled his breast.
Ambition stirred his great, majestic heart
From earliest days. Within Old Glory’s light
He marched and won for her new honors bright,
And brought prosperity to every mart.
He ruled the Nation with the rule of love,
And all the people bowed beneath his sway.
Mighty to do, yet gentle as a dove,
The darksome clouds of war he swept away!
He followed in His steps who rules above—
And here we welcomed him but yesterday.Buffalo, Sept. 14th.
