Former Attempt Made
When McKinley Was Governor He Had a Narrow Escape.
The general public has doubtless
forgot that a previous attempt was made on the life of William McKinley. The
first attack took place when Mr. McKinley was Governor of Ohio. He was engaged
in a speech-making tour of the East, and his train was passing through the little
town of Hurricane, in West Virginia, between Charleston and Huntington, at the
time the assault was made upon him. The Journal of Tuesday, Oct. 18, 1892, contained
the following account of the affair:
“A dastardly attempt to injure Governor McKinley
was made at Hurricane, a station midway between Charleston and Huntington, W.
Va., last night. The train was just pushing out when a huge rock struck the
window of the private car next to the Governor, but fortunately did not hurt
any one. Five other stones were thrown. The scoundrel who did the work could
not be found in the darkness.”
