The utter worthlessness of detectives and secret service agents was proved in the assassination of President McKinley. Several were close to the president, and others were scattered through the crowd, yet not one of them detected the anarchistic assassin, notwithstanding the cloth that covered his revolver was plainly seen over his hand long before he reached the president.
