May He Be Spared
McKinley shot?—and by whose hand?
And how inspired the direful thought
That sought the life of one so fraught
With blessings to our native land?
Nor sense nor reason nerved the arm
That raised to strike with fatal harm
The one that stood at our command;
Our loved and honored President.O God of Nations, hear our prayer!
To spare him may it be Thy will;
Shield her, his care;—and may he still
Be spared;—the noble man of prayer,
Whose strong and tactful guiding hand
Holds fast the love of Freedom’s land;
The man of faith, the man of prayer:
Our loved and honored President!
