The Dead President

A mighty land, moved in her soul to tears,
Hung on the heart-beats of a man, whose brow
Had dauntless braved the perils of the past
And led the people from the place of fears

Into the peace and promise of the Now.
A dastard struck: the great heart strove its best,
Then fluttered, stilled; like any child at rest
He lay, and knew God’s purposes, at last.

To our blind sight, O Lord, thy ways seem stern:
But surely (as the dark before the day)
The Children of the Pit must flee away;
By such grim lessons must the Nation learn.
