Columbia Weeps

Columbia weeps,
For her brave chief is dead;
He, whom the nation loved is gone,
Toll, toll the bells, weep, weep for him,
America’s true son!

Columbia weeps,
Her captain is no more;
Her heart with heavy grief is torn[.]
The sun shines dim, the days are dark,
All nature looks forlorn!

Columbia weeps,
A fiend in human shape,
Has slain her hero grand;
With coward hand has stricken down
The noblest in the land!

Columbia weeps,
And as her tears fall fast
She maketh this decree;
In her broad land, where’er ’tis found,
Down, down with anarchy!
