Dead Face Changing Color
President McKinley’s Body Was Not Properly Embalmed.
Washington, D. C., Sept. 17.—It is doubtful if
the people of Canton will be allowed to look at the face of the dead President.
Owing to the condition of his internal organs after his death it was impossible
properly to embalm the President. An attempt was made, but with little success.
As a consequence, the face is already changing color, and it is thought that
decomposition will be so far advanced by Thursday that it will be inexpedient
to take off the lid of the coffin, although the undertakers may be able to restore
the color to the face.
Thousands who saw the dead President to-day were
shocked by the wan and wasted appearance of his face and body and by the discolorations
that have already begun to appear.
