Our Loss

Our flag is draped in mourning
All through our land so free,
A downcast face and sorrowing heart
     On every side we see.
We have a right to sorrow,
For one who was so brave,
For today our noble President
     Is lying in the grave.

He was so brave and loyal,
He was so kind and true,
There is no one in all the land
     Such noble work could do.
No one was ever kinder,
     No one more loved than he;
He was our fond heart’s idol,
Our choice from sea to sea.

But now his race is ended,
     He’s resting ’neath the sod,
His body rests in comfort,
His soul is with his God.
So let us join in sorrow,
And bow our heads in prayer,
That peace be to his loved ones,
     Until they join him there.

Pony, Sept. 23.
