President Roosevelt
It is difficult to even conjecture the effect the death of President McKinley will have upon the country, so intimately was his name bound up with the policy of the party he represented, and so unbounded was the confidence felt in him by the business men in sympathy with him. The accession of Mr. Roosevelt to the Presidential chair is viewed by many with somewhat of alarm. Whether the mantle of his predecessor has fallen upon as competent shoulders is a question none can answer. Mr. Roosevelt is regarded as a patriotic, sturdy citizen. He has fought his way up from the ranks with singular ability and his indomitable will, but what the country will do with him at the helm remains to be seen. Certain it is that he does not enjoy that degree of confidence that was reposed in William McKinley[.]
