     It is a pity that neither of the “detectives” who failed in their duty to protect the president from assault during his handshaking reception at Buffalo had presence of mind or nerve enough to shoot his would-be assassin on the spot. Such a disposition of the villain would have been greeted with most intense satisfaction throughout the country. The fact that the viper esscaped [sic] immediate death is a striking example of respect for law on the part of citizens who are themselves law abiding. It would have been a fitting termination of the creature’s life if it had been snuffed out by a bullet from his own revolver fired by the colored man who wrenched the smoking weapon from his hand.
