An Historic Hearse

Funeral Car Which Carried President McKinley’s Body to the Grave
to Be Used in This City.

The hearse which carried the remains of the late President McKinley from his old home in Canton to the grave is the property of D. D. Jones & Son, the undertakers, of this city, and will soon be used by them in their business here.
     D. D. Jones, jr. [sic], was in Ravena [sic], Ohio, just before the president’s body was taken to Canton, and purchased from the Riddle Coach company, whose factory is at that place, the most magnificent hearse which was on display. Its cost was considerably over $3,000. Mr. Jones left orders to have it shipped to Scranton at once and left Ravena [sic] for Buffalo.
While in the latter city, he received a telegram from the coach company saying that the undertaker having the president’s funeral in charge was looking for the most magnificent hearse he could find and asking permission to let him use the one Mr. Jones had purchased, as there were no others of its kind in stock.
Mr. Jones at once wired back his permission and the hearse was used. Mr. Jones received word yesterday that it has been shipped here from Canton. It will undoubtedly be long kept as a relic by Mr. Jones after its days of usefulness are over.
