Late Mourners
A LOWER TOWN school teacher has a rather interesting story to tell in connection
with the signs of mourning for our late President McKinley. All signs of mourning
have almost totally disappeared, as a result of the following incident, half
pathetic and half humorous, which happened in the school of this teacher.
“There are two little girls—twins—in my class
and they are as much alike as two peas. A few days ago I was somewhat surprised
to see them entering the school room, wearing dresses exactly alike, made of
sombre black muslin and crape.
“‘For whom are you in mourning?’ I asked.
“‘For Mr. McKinley,’ they both exclaimed in one
breath.
“‘Aren’t you somewhat late about it?’ I said,
trying my best to keep from smiling.
“‘Well, you see it’s this way,’ explained one
of the twins. ‘Mother is very poor and did not have enough money with which
to buy us dresses, so when they tore down the black stuff from the place where
she works, mother asked them if she could have some. So they gave her enough
to make us two dresses.’”
