McKinley the Lawyer and Legislator [excerpt]

     Our beloved president is no more. Why do we mourn so sadly? Why are the cities and towns all over our broad land hushed in Sabbath silence today? Why are nearly eighty millions in our land and millions in other lands standing with bowed heads at this hour? Why do we mourn for him more keenly than for others? Blaine excelled him in keenness of intellectual strength. Others have surpassed him in attributes which make men strong and great. We mourn him today because, underlying all these, and as the basis upon which they rest, he possessed those qualities of heart which made him despise the wrong and do the right; which made him broad in his views and extend charity to all; which made him true and lovable in every position in life.
