Notes and Comments [excerpt]
J as we are going to press the news reaches us
of the fatal result of the dastardly attack upon the President of the United
States. The whole civilized world stands aghast, that yet again the constitutional
ruler of a free people has been stricken by the hands of a fanatic Anarchist.
It is no common sorrow that touches the peoples of the world: for Mr. McKinley
was universally beloved. Strong and tender, purposeful and energetic, a faithful
friend and a generous foe, his passing was indeed as his life, full of trust
in God, and full of consideration for the hand that had stricken him.
In a special sense this sad event appeals to our
sympathies; the Hon. Joshua Wilbour, chief representative in Ireland of the
bereaved country, is one of our honorary Fellows, ever ready to show us his
kindly interest and practical support. We sorrow with him in his sorrow; and
we stretch out hands of sympathy to our great brotherhood beyond the seas.
