The hand of an assassin, has suddenly plunged the nation into mourning for its chief magistrate, William McKinley, perhaps, the best loved President of the Republic since the days of Lincoln and Washington.
“We cannot say, and we will not say
“That he is dead—he is just away.”“With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand,
“He has wandered into an unknown land,”“And left us dreaming how very fair
“It needs must be, since he lingers there.”
Words, at such a time, are meaningless, inadequate to express, the loss we have suffered, and we shudder with horror at the crime. But while the world mourns with us, “God reigns and the government still lives.”
