The pope tells a deputation of Austrian Catholics that President McKinley’s death was due to the excessive liberty of America. The Catholics, his holiness is reported as saying, must fight the Socialists, Anarchists, Freemasons, and Jews, as all are threatening humanity with grave dangers. “America’s only hope lies in becoming Catholic.” If America should become Catholic there might still be assassinations, but the church would take care that they did not result from “excessive liberty.”
