  Maggio Trial [excerpt]
Special to The Citizen.
Silver City, N. M., Sept. 25.—At the Maggio hearing
at 10 a. m. before Commissioner Newcomb several witnesses were placed on the
stand, who stated that the prisoner told them months ago that the president
would be killed before October 1.
Maggio on the stand denied the statements and
made a long talk. He said that he was an anarchist, but not against the United
States, but his own country, Italy, and driven to the belief by the hardships
of the poor classes in Italy.
No substantial evidence was introduced by the
prosecution and Maggio was bound over to await the United States grand jury
at Las Cruces on October 7, under $10,000 bond.
