Strong Words from Jacob Riis
Writes from Canada of the Vermin That Plot Against Society.
Jacob Riis, the well known writer on sociology,
has written the following from Canada to a friend in this city:
“In God’s name, when shall we get up sense to
fire out bodily this vermin that is ever plotting and preaching against the
society we are trying to prop? What business have they here and what business
have we to let them stay here? Freedom—the utmost—for every one who will help
build, no matter what may be his opinion or way! But expulsion for those who
come only to tear down and destroy. If there is nowhere they can go—if no other
country wants them—so much the better. We shall then come to a concert of Europe,
and of the world, which shall give them a place of their own, a St. Helena,
where they may live as they please until they have all killed each other off.”
