Mayor Diehl’s Proclamation
He Calls Upon Buffalo People to Observe Day of Prayer.
Mayor Diehl issued the following proclamation this morning before he departed for Washington:
A terrible affliction has befallen our people. The chief magistrate of the Nation has been struck down by an assassin. The great and good President, William McKinley, is no more. The country is bowed with grief and anguish.
The President of the United States and the Governor of the State of New York have appointed Thursday, the 19th day of September, 1901, the day on which the body of the dead President will be consigned to its last resting place to be a day of mourning and prayer throughout the United States.
Let the emblems of mourning attest the universal grief, and upon the day thus set apart, let all the people of this community refrain from all secular pursuits and assemble in their respective places of worship to pay reverence to the departed President and to offer up prayers to Almighty God for the support and comfort of the bereaved family and for a new impulse of patriotism to guard the country which he loved so well.CONRAD DIEHL,
