Sec. Long Receives News
Undecided Over Future Plans—Refused to Say Anything for Publication.
Buckfield, Maine, Sept. 6.—Hon. John D. Long,
secretary of the navy who has been passing his vacation at the Long homestead,
learned of the shooting of President McKinley to-night, and was deeply affected
by the news. He proceeded to his home at once declaring he was undecided about
his future plans on account of the suddeness of the news. The secretary positively
refused to say anything for publication.
Detroit, Sept. 6.—When Secretary Cortelyou’s bulletin
was read to Former Secretary Alger, he rejoiced to hear the president had passed
through the operation so successfully. He said of the attempted assassination:
“It was a profound and awful shock to both Mrs.
Alger and myself. Words cannot express how deeply we feel for the president
and his devoted wife.”
