ON TUESDAY MORNING the last scene in the sad drama, by which a nation was deprived of an honored ruler, a loving wife robbed of a devoted husband, a nation of people thrown into consternation and the entire civilized world greatly shocked, by the execution of the miserable creature, who designed and carried out his deplorable villainy. His rejection of religious consolation affords no surprise, considering the hideousness of his crime, because, and with no desire to be sacrillgious [sic], it is more than doubtful if Divine mercy could have encompassed a soul more depraved. His destruction was justly deserved and the most compassionate being would find it difficult to discover the slightest pity for the perpetrator of a crime so absolutely detestable in its nature and infinitely inexcusable. He is gone and will appear before his God to answer for his horrible sin and to receive his punishment. It was just and necessary that he be removed from the presence of mankind, upon even whose form and image he was a disgrace, an incubus, whose memory remains only as a foul recollection of the most despicable member of the human family whose very existence created an offensive eruption upon the face of Mother Earth.
